4/17 Morning Service : Christ before Caiaphas (John 18:19-24)

April 17 | 2020

Jeremiah says of man, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure”(17:9). it does mean that the roots of even the most heinous crimes ever perpetrated in the history of the world are within us and that, being placed in a situation similar to that of others who did these things, we have nothing within to hinder us from doing likewise. Given the situation and authority, each of us will do exactly what Caiaphas did. We would have tried to get rid of Jesus. As we looked at the actions of these courts, we thought we had better righteousness and said, “Look at what these atrocities have done. How terrible!” It should not be said. Rather, looking at their actions, we must know that they thought they were doing the best they could for the benefit of the Jewish nation, but they committed the greatest crimes in history. Yet we must admit, “If it had not been for the grace of God, I would have been there.”
